This year’s parade is scheduled for Sunday, March 25, 2007, with a 2:30 P.M. sharp step-off from Halsted and Randolph Street in Chicago’s Greek Town.
The 2007 parade will be a special one with our Grand Marshall being Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias along with Greece’s Deputy Minister of Culture with Responsibilities for Sport George Orfanos.
We look forward to seeing one and all again at this year’s parade, another wonderful celebration of Greek Independence, culture, family and heritage.

"HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER" A GREEK FILM TO OPEN IN CHICAGO
ATLANTA The critically-acclaimed and award-winning film from Greece, HARD
GOODBYES: MY FATHER (DISKOLI APOCHERETISMI: O BABAS MOU), will open at the Loews
Esquire, 58 East Oak St. on Friday June 18th, Fathers Day Weekend, for an
exclusive Chicago-area engagement.
Onboard as a City Host is the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center, A National
Institution.
Coincidentally, the Olympic Torch will be travelling across the United States
that same week, passing through Atlanta that day on its way to New York City.
Needless to say, Greece and the excitement of the Olympic Games will be on many
minds.
And this summer will mark the 35th anniversary of the moonlanding.
HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER has won a number of international prizes,
including the FIPRESCI Prize (for its acute symbiosis of daily routine and
metaphorical sense of life), the Best Actor Award and the Greek Film Critics
Prize at the 2002 International Thessaloniki Film Festival. Athens-based
writer/director Penny Panayotopoulou also won the Best Directorial Debut Award
at the 2002 Greek State Cinema Awards.
Giorgos Karayannis, who stars as the films 10-year-old hero, won the 2002
Locarno International Film Festivals Leopard Prize for Best Actor. His fellow
contenders: Gerard Depardieu (AIME TON PERE), Robin Williams (ONE HOUR PHOTO)
and Matt Damon (GERRY).
The Childrens Jury of the 2002 Olympia International Film Festival awarded the
film its Best Feature Prize.
HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER tells the story of a 10-year-old boy in Athens
who makes a pact with his father to watch on television mans first landing on
the moon. The year is 1969. The two are dreamers and explorers. They know by
heart the stories of Jules Verne, the man who had envisioned a shot to the moon
one century earlier.
Like a magician, Elias father transforms their middle-class existence in Athens
into another world. Their blue car becomes a spaceship (Birbilo) that they
imagine will travel to the moon. But Elias father would be unable to keep that
nighttime promise.
Their shared love of storytelling is what allows Elias to keep his father alive
first in a My Favorite Season school composition and later in postcards to
Grandmother. It is the imagination that allows Elias to transcend the
unimaginable.
HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER has screened at nearly 20 international film
festivals, from Pusan and Karlovy Vary to Chicago, San Francisco, and Toronto,
where it was showcased in the Discovery section along with WHALE RIDER and
HUKKLE. In fact, famed Toronto programmer Dimitri Eipides called the film an
imaginative, deeply insightful debut. In his programming notes, he wrote, The
grace with which Panayotopoulou finishes her portrait marks her as a director to
watch in the future.
HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER won over Josef Wutz, the director of Filmfest
Hamburg, to such a degree that the film was singled out on the film festivals
own homepage in 2002 as a film that should not be missed.
HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER has been greatly received by critics. It
received four-star reviews from the UKs Guardian Unlimited and the BBC. The film
also received the best review of the week by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
and Newsday, when it opened in Atlanta and Long Island, New York respectively.
In his article, Never Mind the Subtitles: Whos the Next Pedro Almodovar, (Times
Online, May 2003), Daniel Rosenthal, the managing editor of Variety
International Film Guide, singled out overseas directors to look out for. Among
them: Penny Panayotopoulou.
On a sad note, the actress Despo Diamantidou, who played the grandmother in
HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER, died in Athens in February 2004 at the age of 88.
This role was the last in a career spanning 50 years and more than 40 movies,
including Jules Dassins NEVER ON SUNDAY. Ms. Diamantidou also performed on
Broadway.
In HARD GOODBYES: MY FATHER, her characters unwillingness to accept
reality runs parallel to that of her grandson, Elias. In the end, both learn to
accept the truth in their own way and in their own time.
This film marks the first U.S. theatrical release for Atlanta-based Sipapu
Films.
